Negative changes in the Arctic

We’ve all heard a lot about global warming and the melting of the poles, the extinction of arctic wildlife and increase in the temperature of the oceans. This is not a problem alien to us and is not a subject of the future, we are living at the moment and should worry more about it.

In recent decades, as unbelievably as it may seem, about 2,560,000 square kilometers of sea ice have disappeared. And how much is that? Putting together the countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark, we could have more or less the proportion of the territory.

It is clear that this has not been overnight, but over the years it has been generated, and the speed in which this is moving is very alarming, as it has been reported that the melting is moving forward about 20 days compared to previous years.

The changes in the Arctic climate started to become more noticeable between the 1970s and 1980s and such generations began to hear about this new issue that caused no great importance, perhaps because it was believed that the consequences would not be as severe or that there were still many years before disasters would occur.

Let’s imagine that the problem has progressed and tundra has turned into taiga. All dead plant and animal species that had been kept frozen, are now exposed to sunlight and every time a living thing dies, it will free carbon dioxide and methane, to the atmosphere which will further contribute to global warming. That is why the Arctic represents a necessary balance, as it keeps proportion the toxic substances emitted by bodies of other organisms in the world.

The way it affects living beings

The temperature rise in the oceans harms living creatures that live there. There is fauna with high adaptability but also more vulnerable animals that fail to confront the changes presented.

Economically and culturally, important species are at risk. Both aquatic and terrestrial beings are indispensable for the cultural livelihood of indigenous peoples of the Arctic. The native inhabitants use most of the anatomy of hunted animals: furs to make thermal garments or for sale, bones for making tools to improve their standard of living and meat to eat. Without that raw material it would be almost impossible for them to survive, plus major ethnic populations in the world would become extinguish.

Video documentaries and scientific texts can prove us that global warming is already seriously affecting polar bears, whales and organisms as small as krill. The body structure of the thousands of arctic animals are designed and adapted to freezing temperatures. Thick layers of fur, feathers or fat, cover the sensitive tissues and provide them with lot of heat, so in the event that the Arctic will become a warm place, it is almost a fact that none of them will survive.

Importance of the Arctic to the world

Why all the campaign to save the Arctic? On what can its spoilage affect me if I live thousands of kilometers away?

If you live in a warm area, you’ve probably noticed, or rather, you have felt the heat is stronger and staying cool is increasingly difficult. Believe it or not, this relates to what happens in the Arctic. That northern region functions as a refrigerator for the world. Keeps the planet in its regulated temperature and prevents overheating since it emits more heat into space than it receives. All alterations suffered by the Arctic, will be reflected in every corner of the earth.

This topic has sown doubts in the world population as a result of the inconsistency of the data produced. Some scientists say that in 100 years the Arctic will no longer exist, and others, indicate that by 2040, the summers of this region will have completely melted the snow, causing less cold winters and most wildlife to be in an alarming danger of extinction.
No matter how much sophisticated technology is developed, human beings will never be able to tell in the strongest terms what changes will nature present and when will they occur. This is not a natural phenomenon but a caused condition, so we don’t exactly know what could arise.

The purpose of disclosing this information is not to exaggerate the situation or try to create social chaos, but to achieve full understanding of this issue so that we can voluntarily change certain habits that cause the acceleration of global warming. Become better humans and try to do less damage on the earth where future generations will live, it’s part of our responsibility.
